Year 9 GUIDANCE

Welcome to Year 9, you are entering the time when you will need to begin to consider what subjects you wish to take for your GCSE options.

Choosing subjects that suit your interests and abilities is essential. It is really important to listen to your subject teachers and think about how well you have coped with subjects so far to consider studying any of them at GCSE and beyond. The choice of your GCSE and vocational subjects might have some effect on what you can do in the future.

Here are some typical questions and answers for Year 9 students:

I know what job I want in the future, what GCSEs should I take?

If you have a career in mind, it’s a good idea to think about the subjects that might be needed.  Job Profiles on our website is a very good starting point. Here you will find 100’s of career leaflets, listed alphabetically, and you can begin to learn more about relevant qualifications to consider.

In my experience, it is only a few students (a minority!) that usually have clear ideas and that won’t change over the years! So, above all, it’s important to think about your ability and interests.

Help, I don’t know what job I want to do in the future?

It’s perfectly OK if you do not have an idea of what you’d like to do when you are older! It is very likely people with ideas will change their mind over time.  This early in your career, it’s best to keep an open mind and take up as many opportunities as possible to explore new ideas.

You can get some career ideas linked to your skills and interests by using online tools such as the Job Matching Quiz and Buzz Quiz on our website.

During your time in education , Careers Wales will also offer school lots of Career and Work Related Education opportunities, in line with nationally recognised standards called the Gatsby Benchmarks,  all aimed at broadening your career ideas.
